Hazard lights are to be used with the intention of making your presence known to other drivers or to warn others of a nearby hazard.
In an ideal world, you should not have to use your hazard lights very often, but it’s important to know when and why to use them.
You’ll need to know about them for your theory test.
What are your hazard lights?
Your hazard warning lights signify danger to other drivers by blinking both your orange indicator lights simultaneously.
It can be turned on and off by a button that usually sits in the centre of your dashboard that features a red triangle that also flashes when activated.
In the event of a breakdown
A breakdown is when you’re most likely to need to make use of your hazard lights.
If something doesn’t sound right with your vehicle, your engine breaks down or you run out of fuel, turn your hazard lights on so that other drivers can be prepared for you to break to slow down and stop.
No matter what time of day or night, or how quiet or busy the roads are, you should always turn them on.
Warning of a potential hazard
They can also be used to indicate a potential hazard in the road ahead or around the roadsides.
For example, if traffic comes to a sudden stop in front of you, use your hazard lights to slow down the rear approaching cars sooner to prevent a potential collision. This, however, is a reason why you should not use your hazards to thank other drivers for giving way to you, as other drivers may see this and slow down in a panic.
When not to use your hazard lights
Other reasons to not use your hazard lights include parking wherever you like, even if for a very short period of time – you will still get a ticket if a traffic warden spots you.
You also do not need to use hazard lights if you are being towed, unless on a motorway or dual carriageway. You can use them for a moment as you turn at a junction, but only until the feel drivers have acknowledged your presence and danger.
